Once completed, the port will be able to handle six vessels, each over 400 meters long, and will feature Europe's tallest quay cranes. The project is expected to create 400 permanent jobs, adding to the current workforce of 1,200 at the site.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, DP World's Group Chairman, and CEO, stated that the expansion will support the flow of British trade by connecting exporters with global markets and strengthening supply chain resilience. The investment at London Gateway will exceed £3 billion in total.
Opened in 2013 on the site of a former oil refinery, London Gateway has grown into one of the UK’s key logistics hubs, with a £350 million fourth berth recently completed. Ernst Schulze, CEO of DP World UK Ports & Terminals, highlighted the site’s strategic location and infrastructure as ideal for this expansion, noting its importance in ensuring reliability and resilience for customers during periods of disruption.
Currently, the port handles nearly two million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually, and the expansion, pending planning approval, is expected to significantly boost this volume. DP World employs 5,500 people in the UK and operates not only at London Gateway but also at the container terminal in Southampton. Together, these ports manage a substantial share of the country’s containerized perishable goods imports.
Globally, DP World operates in 78 countries and handles 10 percent of the world’s trade. Its logistics services in the UK cover warehousing, transport, and port-centric logistics across sectors such as automotive and perishables.
