First Hybrid-Electric CSOV Launched by Damen, Windcat, and CMB.TECH

The first of six commissioning service operation vessels (CSOVs) developed by Damen Shipyards, Windcat, and CMB.TECH has been launched at the Ha Long shipyard in Vietnam.

Outfitting and commissioning operations will continue as the vessel is prepared for delivery in the second quarter of 2025.

The 87-meter-long CSOV is designed to accommodate up to 120 personnel and can remain at offshore locations for up to 30 days at a time, providing technical and maintenance support.

Damen Shipyards’ Benelux sales manager, Joost van der Weiden, highlighted the vessel’s hybrid-electric propulsion system, which eliminates the need for a backup diesel generator and optimizes energy efficiency. The system, combined with a highly efficient power distribution and thruster configuration, enhances dynamic positioning during transfer operations.

Van der Weiden added, “We expect these innovations to lead to significant reductions in fuel consumption and emissions. Thanks to CMB.TECH’s dual-fuel hydrogen technology, the entire series of six vessels will be able to use hydrogen as a fuel, with the potential to increase hydrogen usage as the energy market evolves.”
