The tragic event occurred on August 2, 2024, around 10:30 p.m. at the Sapar Alpha platform near Bintulu, Sarawak, involving Icon Offshore's vessel, Icon Amara. Reports indicate that a violent explosion in the vessel's engine room resulted in the deaths of two mariners and left another seriously injured.

Local authorities have identified the deceased as the PSV's assistant engineer and an oiler, while a second oiler is currently receiving treatment in a local hospital for severe burns covering over 30% of his body.

In a statement, Icon Offshore extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and expressed deep sympathy to the injured and their families. The company emphasized its commitment to providing all necessary assistance during this challenging time.

The cause of the explosion remains undisclosed. Icon Offshore stated that it is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation by authorities and expects the Icon Amara to resume operations once the investigation concludes. The company also noted that the vessel and its crew are insured.

The Malaysian offshore supply vessel operator, which released its statement on August 12—over a week after the accident—faced criticism from local media for the delay in providing details about the incident.

“Please be informed that there was a delay in releasing information as we worked closely with our client and relevant authorities to ensure accuracy and appropriate handling of the situation,” the company explained.

The 3,500-dwt, 77-meter-long Icon Amara is a DP2 diesel-electric PSV built in Malaysia in 2011.
