Indonesia will strengthen its defense partnerships and take a more proactive stance on strategic issues affecting its sovereignty, including maritime security, safe sea passage, and fisheries, Foreign Minister Sugiono announced on Friday.

Sugiono emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to finalizing a code of conduct between ASEAN and China for the South China Sea while upholding ASEAN’s centrality. Though Indonesia is not a claimant in territorial disputes over this crucial global trade route, it has faced challenges from Chinese coast guard incursions into its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Beijing claims sovereignty over nearly the entire South China Sea, creating frequent conflicts with Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. While China insists its operations are lawful, an international arbitration ruling in 2016 rejected its expansive claims—a decision Beijing does not recognize.

“Indonesia’s position remains prioritising conflict resolution that is peaceful,” Sugiono said, stressing the importance of constructive dialogue on a legally binding and enforceable code of conduct based on international maritime law. Talks on the code, initiated in 2017, have made slow progress due to ongoing disputes.

Beyond regional security, Sugiono outlined Indonesia’s plans to expand global trade, including with Africa and the Pacific, and finalize free trade agreements. He reaffirmed that Indonesia’s entry into BRICS aligns with its independent foreign policy.

He also reiterated Indonesia’s unwavering support for Palestine, calling for a ceasefire and accountability in the Gaza conflict.
