The enhanced missile, known as the Type 12 SSM (Upgraded), is designed to extend its range from the original 200 km to at least 900 km, to reach 1,200 km. The missile’s design has also been modified to reduce its radar cross-section for improved stealth. A new feature, Up to Date Command (UDTC), allows the missile to receive real-time target information via satellite during flight, enabling more precise targeting of moving vessels.

The Japanese government initiated the upgrade project in 2020 to address concerns over China’s growing maritime and military capabilities. The longer range will allow Japan to engage enemy ships from outside the range of anti-aircraft defenses.
