Japan Invest in LNG Supply with $1 Billion Loan in Australia

The Scarborough project, set to start delivering LNG in 2026, is expected to produce up to 8 million tons of LNG annually. This is significant for Japan, which imported about 65 million tons of LNG last year.

In response to the 2022 energy crisis that caused record-high prices and supply risks, Japan, the world’s second-largest LNG buyer, is increasing its efforts to ensure a stable supply of natural gas. Over the past year, Woodside has sold stakes in the Scarborough project to Japanese companies Jera Co. and LNG Japan.

Despite its importance for energy supply, the Scarborough project faces opposition from climate activists who are against the development of new fossil fuel projects.
