Germany’s first fully electric seagoing catamaran (E-Kat), commissioned by AG Reederei Norden-Frisia, has successfully completed official acceptance trials. Built by Damen Shipyards in the Netherlands, the 32.3-meter-long and 9.6-meter-wide vessel is set to begin operations between Norddeich and Norderney in early 2025.

The trials confirm that the catamaran meets all regulatory requirements, allowing for official approval, necessary permits, and insurance finalization. The vessel is now ready for transfer to its home port in Norddeich.

According to Michael Garrelts, Technical Inspector at AG Reederei Norden-Frisia, all formalities have been finalized, and the vessel is expected to arrive in Norddeich in January, weather permitting.

The land-based charging infrastructure is nearly complete, and full-power charging tests at 1,800 kW have been successfully conducted. The aluminum-built catamaran accommodates up to 150 passengers and aligns with the company’s broader sustainability efforts, which include solar-powered parking areas and widespread EV charging stations.

The E-Kat will cut travel time between Norddeich and Norderney by nearly half while operating with zero CO₂ emissions, according to Executive Cal-Ulfert Stegmann.
