Sanmar Shipyards has delivered a custom-designed Ice Class 1A tug, AJAX, to Finnish operator Alfons Håkans. The tug is designed to operate in the northern Baltic's challenging conditions and is based on the TundRA 2600 design by Robert Allan Ltd.

With a length of 25.8m, a moulded beam of 11.8m, and a draft of 5.05m, AJAX performs escort, ship assistance, icebreaking, and open-sea towing. Its twin CAT 3512E engines produce a 60-ton bollard pull and 12-knot free-running speed, meeting ABS NOx and IMO Tier III emission standards. Environmentally conscious features include CAT “E” engines and a CAT “SCR” system.

AJAX is equipped with a heavy-duty foredeck winch, a foldable knuckle boom crane, and a 75.2m³ fuel capacity. Like all TundRA tugs, it excels in icebreaking while maintaining strong seakeeping and towing performance.

Rüçhan Civgin, Sanmar’s Commercial Director, emphasized the collaboration, stating, “That we have precisely matched their requirements is a great achievement by all those involved from the drawing board to final sea trials.”
