A Philippine-flagged cargo ship, Jerlyn Kathness, sank in the San Bernardino Strait near Samar Island, resulting in one death and two missing crew members, the Philippine Coast Guard reported on Tuesday.
The incident occurred Monday when large waves overwhelmed the 199-tonne vessel, which was transporting 24 tons of cement from Cebu to Samar. 11 crew members were rescued overnight by passing ships, and another crew member swam to San Juan Island after 25 hours in the water, officials said.
The body of one crew member was recovered near Biri Island, while search efforts continue for the remaining two missing crew members.
Built in 1993, the general cargo ship is under investigation, and authorities are working to determine the cause of the sinking.
