The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has taken a major step in its green transition with the arrival of six energy-efficient tugboats, including Europe’s first fully electric RSD tugboat, Volta 1.

Constructed by Damen Shipyards Group in Vietnam, the tugboats underwent rigorous trials before being transported over 10,000 kilometers to Antwerp, arriving on November 28. These vessels feature advanced designs, including dual-bow maneuverability and systems to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

Volta 1, a groundbreaking electric tugboat with a bollard pull of 70 tons, can fully recharge in two hours using a 1.5 MW charging station. All six vessels comply with IMO Tier III regulations, aligning with the port's sustainability objectives.

" With this new generation of energy-efficient tugboats, we take a significant step forward in our transition to a climate-neutral fleet. This investment demonstrates our commitment to sustainable innovation. The Volta 1 is a groundbreaking addition to our fleet and a beacon for the entire maritime sector," said Rob Smeets, COO of the port.

The new tugboats, part of the port's fleet renewal program, complement earlier innovations like the hydrogen-powered Hydrotug and methanol-powered Methatug, underlining the port's dedication to emissions reduction.
