German liner giant Hapag-Lloyd has signed an agreement with China-based Goldwind for the supply of 250,000 tonnes of green methanol per year. The blend of bio- and e-methanol will cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 70%, advancing Hapag-Lloyd’s sustainability goals.

The agreement aligns with Hapag-Lloyd’s Strategy 2030, which includes reducing fleet emissions by one-third by 2030 and achieving net-zero operations by 2045. "This marks a significant step toward leading the transformation of the liner shipping industry," said CEO Rolf Habben Jansen.

The green methanol supply will potentially save up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2e annually compared to conventional fuels. Goldwind plans to build a new green methanol plant in Hinggan League, China, with initial volumes expected in 2026.

This deal complements a similar methanol supply agreement Goldwind has with Hapag-Lloyd’s future partner, Maersk, underscoring the industry’s growing shift toward sustainable fuels.
