Finland has made history as the first country to ban cargo ships from discharging wastewater in its coastal waters. The groundbreaking law, passed by the Finnish Parliament, will take effect in July, extending existing regulations for passenger ships to include cargo vessels.
"This decision is a world-class environmental achievement," said Ville Wahlberg, CEO of the Baltic Sea Action Group, emphasizing its importance for the fragile sea ecosystem.
Although the law doesn't prevent discharges in international waters, Wahlberg expressed hope that shipping companies and cargo owners would prioritize port waste management.
The move could inspire neighboring Baltic nations, including Sweden and Denmark, to implement similar measures, further strengthening regional efforts to protect marine environments.
