China launched its first hydrogen fuel cell river container ship, Dong Fang Qing Gang, on December 18, 2024, aiming to reduce emissions in inland shipping. The vessel features the largest hydrogen fuel cell system ever deployed on a Chinese ship and will operate between Zhapu Port in Jiaxing and Xiasha Port in Hangzhou.
Equipped with two 240 kW hydrogen fuel cells and a 550 kg hydrogen storage system, the ship boasts a range of 235 miles. Developed by Sinosynergy, its innovative system integrates hydrogen storage, supply, and lithium battery support, offering a seamless power solution.
The vessel can carry 64 TEU (1,450 tonnes) and measures 64.9 meters in length with a displacement of 2,000 tonnes. Its design represents a first for China, combining hydrogen fuel cells with propulsion and control systems in a maritime application.
The ship’s hull was launched in Zhejiang Province, with full outfitting and testing planned for 2025. China is also advancing projects in battery-powered shipping and electrification systems, further demonstrating its commitment to sustainable maritime technologies.
