A female student from Turkish Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Maritime Studies, Department of Marine Transportation and Management Engineering, began her compulsory internship in 2022 on the ship M…1, anchored in the Iskenderun area.

During her internship, the student reported being sexually harassed and filed a lawsuit. Her lawyer, Samsa Emin Körüklü, a board member of the Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Maritime Studies Alumni Association (DEFMED), represented her in court.

The defendant, N.A., who was serving as the ship's chief engineer, was found guilty of sexual harassment and fined.

The court postponed the sentence due to the defendant's clean criminal record, and N.A. will be under supervision for five years. He was acquitted of the charges of making threats and disturbing public peace.

The plaintiff's legal team plans to update their complaint to the Seafarers Disciplinary Commission to prevent N.A. from working on ships.

Lawyer Körüklü emphasized their continued efforts to create a safe working environment for female seafarers.
