Egyptian authorities report 16 people are missing and 28 have been rescued after the tourist boat Sea Story sank in the Red Sea near Marsa Alam. Among the missing are two British nationals, one Finnish citizen, and four Egyptians.
The vessel, carrying 44 people, including 13 crew, sent a distress signal early Monday morning. Survivors reported a large wave caused the boat to capsize. Weather forecasters had issued warnings of turbulent conditions, with wave heights reaching up to 4 meters.
The Egyptian Navy and military aircraft are conducting a 24-hour search operation. Survivors were found in the Wadi el-Gemal area and are receiving medical care. The boat, owned by an Egyptian national, had passed a safety inspection in March 2024.
The Sea Story was on a five-day diving trip with passengers from Spain, Britain, Germany, the US, and China. While most survivors are in good health, authorities are working to locate the remaining missing individuals.
