Cruise vacations offer an ideal way to relax, explore new destinations, and indulge in luxury at sea. But before you embark on your dream cruise, be aware of the items that could lead to unexpected consequences, including a lifetime ban from cruising.

Gary Bembridge, a cruise expert and podcaster, has issued a warning for holidaymakers about the surprising and sometimes strange items that are prohibited on many cruise lines. Packing these items could not only spoil your trip but also result in being permanently banned from the cruise line.

1. Multi-Plug Adaptors and Extension Cords

In today’s digital world, it’s hard to imagine going anywhere without multiple devices that need charging. However, cruise ships have strict rules when it comes to electrical devices. One of the most common packing mistakes is bringing a multi-plug adaptor with surge protection. According to Gary Bembridge, all cruise lines ban extension cords with surge protectors because they are not compatible with the ship’s electrical system and could cause a fire hazard.

While USB-only adaptors are allowed, it’s essential to check the regulations of the specific cruise line you’re traveling with to avoid any issues at embarkation.

2. Bluetooth Speakers

While they may seem like the perfect companion for sunbathing on the deck, Bluetooth speakers are strictly prohibited on certain cruise lines, such as Carnival Cruises. The official reason for this ban is safety – ensuring that passengers can always hear important onboard announcements.

But Gary suggests there’s another reason behind the ban: the inconvenience of hearing loud music around the ship’s public areas. Bluetooth speakers can be especially disruptive on balconies, by the pool, or even in cabins, where other guests might prefer a quieter atmosphere.

3. Wi-Fi Hotspots and Satellite Dishes

Cruise ships are known for their internet limitations, so it’s no surprise that bringing your own Wi-Fi hotspot or satellite dish (like Starlink devices) could get you into trouble. Gary recalls a passenger being denied boarding after posting a video using a Starlink mini-dish onboard.

If you want to stay connected while cruising, make sure to rely on the ship's designated internet services. Bringing your own device could result in having it confiscated, or worse, being refused entry.

4. Wheelchairs Without Accessible Rooms

For passengers who rely on wheelchairs, it’s essential to book an accessible cabin in advance. If you show up at embarkation without a pre-arranged accessible room, you could be denied boarding. This policy, which dates back to 1974, ensures that ships are prepared to accommodate passengers with mobility needs safely.

Make sure to declare your need for a wheelchair-accessible cabin when booking your cruise. Otherwise, you risk not being able to board.

5. CBD Oil and Other Banned Substances

With the growing popularity of CBD oil for pain relief, some passengers may not realize that certain cruise lines have banned these products. Gary recounts the story of a passenger who had CBD gummies confiscated and was banned for life from cruising with Carnival Cruise Line.

If you’re considering bringing CBD products for medical reasons, make sure to check your cruise line’s policy beforehand.

6. The Cardboard Pineapple – A Surprising No-No

In a surprising twist, cardboard pineapples have also been flagged as prohibited items on some ships. Why? When placed upside down on a cabin door, this innocent decoration signals to other guests that the room’s occupants may be open to “swinging” encounters. It’s a surprising item on the list, but it’s one you’ll want to avoid packing!

Pack Smart, Cruise Smart

While it may be tempting to bring your favorite gadgets and comfort items on your cruise, it’s essential to remember that cruise lines have strict regulations for a reason – mainly safety and passenger comfort. Avoid packing these banned items, and you’ll have a smooth sailing experience without any unexpected disruptions.

Before setting sail, always check your cruise line’s official policies on prohibited items and book your accommodations accordingly. By following these guidelines, you can enjoy a relaxing vacation with peace of mind.
