On January 16, Damen Shipyards Galati reached a key milestone in the production of fully electric ferries for BC Ferries by cutting steel for the third vessel in a four-ferry order. Simultaneously, another vessel in the series has entered the grand block assembly phase at the shipyard.

These state-of-the-art ferries, based on Damen’s double-ended 8117 E3 Ferry design, will be the first fully electric vessels in BC Ferries' fleet. Scheduled to enter service by 2027, the ships will operate on routes between Nanaimo and Gabriola Island and Campbell River and Quadra Island, carrying up to 390 passengers and 47 vehicles.

The Island Class ferries are central to BC Ferries’ goal of cutting corporate emissions by 10,000 tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030. Damen’s E3 notation ensures these vessels are environmentally friendly, efficient in operation, and economically viable.

During the steel cutting ceremony, Damen Shipyards Group Chairman Kommer Damen stated, “The long-standing relationship we have with BC Ferries is a prime example of how Damen works to support its customers…These fully electric ferries prepare the ground for zero emissions operations, bringing BC Ferries’ efficiency goals within reach.”

Ed Hooper, BC Ferries’ Executive Director of Shipbuilding, highlighted the importance of progress, saying, “Each stage of construction brings us closer to delivering cleaner, quieter, and more efficient vessels that align with our commitment to serving coastal communities.”

Damen is also supplying BC Ferries with charging towers, enabling battery recharging during passenger boarding and disembarking.

Currently, Damen has six fully electric ferries under contract for Canada, including two for Toronto. With decades of shipbuilding expertise, Damen remains at the forefront of sustainable maritime innovation.
