Danish ferry and logistics company DFDS has completed the acquisition of Ekol Logistics' international transport network for DKK 1.8 billion (€240 million), following revised terms since the initial share purchase agreement was terminated in early November 2024.
Ekol Logistics will operate as a separate unit within DFDS' Logistics Division, while some country organizations will integrate into the Continent business unit. DFDS also secured an option to extend its terminal agreement with Yalova Port.
Torben Carlsen, CEO of DFDS, highlighted that the acquisition strengthens the company’s transport network and supports Türkiye's growth as a manufacturing hub. The deal builds on a 2019 partnership, providing access to ferry capacity in the Mediterranean.
Ekol Logistics' transport network is expected to enhance DFDS' Mediterranean ferry routes and connect Türkiye to its broader logistics network. The acquisition also bolsters DFDS’ presence in a growing region, with increasing nearshoring of supply chains to Europe.
Despite a decline in EBIT margin to 2.5% last year and an expected loss this year, DFDS aims to improve Ekol’s EBIT margin to 5% by 2027, with integration efforts focusing on increasing transport volumes, optimizing equipment use, and consolidating operations across phases.
This acquisition is part of DFDS’ broader investment strategy, which includes a €1 billion commitment to a fleet of battery-electric ships aimed at zero-emission goals and green corridor development in collaboration with European ports.
