Embracing Digital Transformation in the Tanker Industry

Kongsberg Digital's Karen Algaard and DNV's Catrine Vestereng discuss the vital role of AI and data security in tanker inspections and compliance at the last Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference in London.

At the last Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference, held in London 22 October 2024, Karen Algaard, Director of Customer Success at Kongsberg Digital, and Catrine Vestereng, Senior Vice President and Global Business Director for Tankers at DNV, discuss how digital transformation is reshaping the tanker industry. They highlighted significant opportunities for efficiency and compliance.

During a Q&A session, Algaard addressed data security in open versus closed digital systems, noting that while Kongsberg’s infrastructure is secure, integrating third-party systems carries risks. “When we rely on our own systems, we can ensure complete cyber security,” she stated, emphasizing the need to balance security with operational flexibility.

Vestereng discussed the benefits of AI in regulatory compliance, particularly with new emissions standards, allowing for streamlined processes and future predictions that give vessel owners a competitive edge. DNV employs predictive models to optimize inspection timing as regulations evolve.

Both experts agreed that successful digital transformation hinges on clear goals, strong infrastructure, and robust cybersecurity. While progress has been made, further advancements in AI and data security are essential for maximizing digital tools and meeting regulatory demands. Algaard reinforced Kongsberg’s commitment to data ownership and secure management, while Vestereng highlighted the necessity of integrating digital twins and AI into inspection and maintenance for improved accuracy and quality in vessel assessments.
