A significant explosion occurred at the Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan on August 10, 2024, when the container ship YM Mobility, operated by Taiwan’s Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp, was docked at the Beilun terminal. The blast, which caused extensive damage and was felt up to one kilometer away, fortunately resulted in no casualties. The 20 crew members on board were safely evacuated.
The explosion happened around 1:40 PM, shortly after YM Mobility had arrive from Shanghai. The container that exploded was declared to contain hazardous materials. Yang Ming Marine reported that the container was incorrectly classified as one that did not require electricity, despite containing combustible goods, including lithium batteries.
Preliminary investigations suggest the explosion was likely caused by overheating in the container’s cooling system. In response, the Maritime Safety Administration has called for stricter oversight of hazardous materials handling.
Ningbo Zhoushan Port Co. Ltd, the port's operator, confirmed the details of the explosion and stated that fire control measures were quickly implemented, containing the situation. Yang Ming Marine emphasized that their emergency response protocols were effective in preventing a larger disaster.
YM Mobility, which can carry 6,600 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), was scheduled to continue to Jakarta, Indonesia. However, repairs could take up to three months, according to China Central Television (CCTV).
Following the explosion, Yang Ming Marine and its subsidiary Huan Ming are working with local authorities to manage the aftermath and provide updates on the vessel's status. Enhanced safety checks on similar shipments are expected as the handling of hazardous materials comes under increased scrutiny.
