Fuel Spill from M/V Akhisar at Spanish Port Threatens Protected Areas

A refueling mishap involving Bayraktar Shipping's M/V Akhisar resulted in a three-ton fuel spill in Gran Canaria Port, prompting a swift response from Spanish emergency services as the spill threatened protected areas in the Canary Islands.

According to HaberDenizde.com, during refueling at Gran Canaria Port, Spain, Bayraktar Shipping's 657 TEU container ship M/V Akhisar spilled three tons of fuel overboard.

In response, the Spanish emergency service, Salvamento Marítimo, deployed three patrol boats and an airplane, and set up barriers in an attempt to contain the spill.

Red Flag

However, the fuel spread southwestward, prompting the raising of a red flag as it reached Gran Canaria Beach.

Salvamento Marítimo has cautioned that the spill is moving toward protected areas in the Canary Islands, and efforts to mitigate the damage are still underway.

The 8,000 DWT Akhisar, measuring 116.70 meters in length and 18.40 meters in width, had arrived in Gran Canaria from Mindelo, Cape Verde.
