Nicole Gerdes, Managing Partner at Gerdes Green, highlighted the growing demand for sustainability in the maritime industry, stating, "As we witness changes in the climate, it is clear that we cannot continue as we have; things have to change."

To address these challenges, Gerdes Green has ordered a new battery hybrid vessel from Damen, the CF 3850, to gain experience with sustainable technologies and advance towards a carbon-neutral fleet. The vessel can operate on fully electric power for short durations, reducing emissions when sailing in populated areas or approaching ports. Additionally, it is equipped to use shore power, operate on reduced-emission B100 bio-diesel fuel, and benefit from wind-assisted propulsion with Econowind foldable ventofoils to lower fuel consumption and emissions.

German Government Subsidy

The German Government has provided a subsidy for these sustainable innovations through the Namkü directive, recognizing the importance of advancing maritime sustainability.

“We were first drawn to Damen by their experience in the coastal sector,” says Nicole. “This is revealed in the high quality of Damen vessels. The ships are excellent workhorses that are appreciated by our customers. Additionally, the cooperation is good. We are both family-led companies are we share a long-term perspective. It’s not only about making a profit, it’s about finding solutions together and thinking about the next project.”

Reederei Gerdes and Damen have collaborated since the early 2000s, with Damen delivering eight vessels to the company. Both companies share a long-term perspective on developing practical solutions for the maritime industry.

Remko Bouma, Damen’s Commercial Director of Cargo Vessels, expressed pride in the relationship, stating, "We value the input from Reederei Gerdes, which has significantly contributed to developing a vessel that supports the maritime energy transition."
