The Blue Visby project, which aims to cut shipping emissions by addressing the "sail fast, then wait" practice, recently completed trials with 16 LPG carriers from Marubeni Corporation over 40 voyages. These tests, spanning three months, showed impressive results with an average of 29% savings in fuel and GHG emissions. The project provided optimization data in a first-come, first-served context, helping operators make informed decisions on speed adjustments.
Previous trials with CBH Group’s supramax bulkers showed 8-28% savings, proving the platform's adaptability across different maritime operations. During the LPG carrier tests, 919 vessels were monitored 24/7, and 31 recommendations were made to slow down from 13.6 knots to 10.6 knots, reducing emissions effectively.
The consortium, managed by NAPA and Stephenson Harwood, aims to build on these findings and expand trials next year with new members and market segments.
