Danish shipping company A.P. Moller Maersk has added a third dual-fuel, methanol-enabled container vessel to its fleet. The ship, named Antonia Maersk, was christened on August 9 during a ceremony in Aarhus, Denmark, by wind energy company Vestas.

The Antonia Maersk is part of a series of 18 large newbuilds designed to run on green methanol. These vessels, each with a capacity of 16,000 TEU and a length of 350 meters, are being built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) in Ulsan, South Korea. The ships are equipped with dual-fuel engines from German manufacturer MAN Energy Solutions, allowing them to operate on methanol.

Maersk has noted that the design of this new series of vessels includes the bridge and accommodation placed at the front of the vessel, which aims to improve fuel efficiency.

Earlier this year, Maersk christened its first methanol-enabled vessel, Ane Maersk, in January, followed by the second, Astrid Maersk, in April. The next vessel in the series is scheduled to be christened by Nike at the Port of Los Angeles on August 27, 2024.
