Türkiye Signs to Protect Marine Biodiversity in International Waters

During the U.N. General Assembly meetings in New York, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan signed an agreement aimed at protecting and sustainably managing marine biodiversity in international waters.

The agreement is part of the "United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea" and covers marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdictions, including territorial seas, continental shelves, and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ).

The agreement emphasizes the creation of marine protected areas, use of management tools for specific regions, and the need for environmental impact assessments for planned activities. With Türkiye's signature, the process for countries to join the agreement is now underway.

Key provisions include the equitable sharing of benefits from marine discoveries, promoting good governance in international waters, and building capacity in developing countries. Türkiye has stated its commitment to supporting international efforts in environmental protection and maritime law.

High seas, which are open to all nations, cover two-thirds of the world's oceans, yet less than 1% are currently under protection.
