Dalian Shipbuilding, in collaboration with China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, has begun constructing the world’s first methanol dual-fuel intelligent very large crude carrier (VLCC) for China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES). This eighth-generation VLCC, capable of carrying approximately 2.1 million barrels of crude oil, incorporates a methanol dual-fuel main engine and advanced features like exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), intelligent energy efficiency systems, and smart operation and maintenance technologies.

CMES, a long-term strategic partner of Dalian Shipbuilding, has previously collaborated on projects including large tankers and LNG carriers. In August 2024, CMES ordered ten energy-efficient tankers from Dalian, with deliveries expected between 2027 and 2028. Dalian is also constructing two LNG carriers for CMES, marking its first energy-saving LNGCs of the new generation.
