Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have announced London Gateway as the primary UK hub for their Gemini Cooperation, set to commence on February 1, 2025. This decision, part of a network optimization initiative, removes Felixstowe from the Asia-Europe services under the shared Gemini network.

The move aligns with the cooperation's strategy to streamline operations with fewer port calls, enhancing service reliability and speed. It follows DP World’s announcement of a £1 billion expansion plan for London Gateway, which aims to make it the UK’s largest container port within five years.

While Maersk’s independently operated services at Felixstowe will remain, the port is expected to see a reduction of two large vessel calls weekly. The Gemini network will adopt a "hub and spoke" model, targeting 90% service reliability compared to the current industry average of 53%.

Local MP Jenny Riddell-Carpenter expressed disappointment, emphasizing Felixstowe’s importance to the UK’s trade network. Further details on the transition are expected soon.
