Hong Kong & Kowloon Ferry (HKKF) has introduced two new zero-emission hybrid ferries designed by Incat Crowther and built by Cheoy Lee Shipyards. The vessels, part of a nine-vessel order, are equipped with hybrid drive trains and lithium-ion batteries, enabling low-emission operations during slow-speed transit, berthing, and maneuvering.

The ferries, one with a carbon hull and the other with an aluminum hull, are part of a Hong Kong Government trial to reduce emissions in the shipping sector. They will operate commuter routes to Peng Chau, Hei Ling Chau, and Lamma Island.

Each vessel features exhaust-treatment systems, solar panels, and battery-supported onboard power. Bureau Veritas has classed the ferries, which are expected to provide insights into ecological performance over time.

This delivery follows two conventional ferries handed over earlier, with five more under construction and scheduled for delivery by 2025. Sam Mackay, Technical Manager at Incat Crowther, highlighted the project as a key step toward sustainable maritime transport.
