Maersk has placed an order for 20 LNG dual-fuel container ships, ranging in size from 9,000 to 17,000 TEU, across three shipyards: Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (China), Hanwha Ocean (South Korea), and New Times Shipbuilding (China). The vessels, with a combined capacity of 300,000 TEU, are set for delivery between 2028 and 2030.
This order completes Maersk's fleet renewal plans announced in August 2024. “These orders are a part of our ongoing fleet renewal programme and in line with our commitment to decarbonisation, as all the vessels will have dual-fuel engines with the intent to operate them on lower emissions fuel,” said Anda Cristescu, Maersk's head of chartering and newbuilding.
In addition to these owned vessels, Maersk has finalized charter contracts for methanol and LNG dual-fuel vessels totaling 500,000 TEU capacity, further supporting its transition to sustainable shipping.
