Shell has resolved its multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Greenpeace over the boarding of an FPSO on a heavy-lift vessel during a protest in January 2023. Initially seeking $2.1 million in damages, Shell agreed to a settlement where Greenpeace will not pay damages but will donate £300,000 ($383,000) to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
As part of the agreement, Greenpeace signed a legally binding commitment prohibiting similar protests near key North Sea oil and gas platforms for 5 to 10 years. Despite this, Greenpeace plans to continue campaigning against Shell’s oil and gas activities.
The incident involved four activists climbing onto the vessel transporting the Penguin FPSO to the North Sea’s Penguins oil and gas field. Shell emphasized safety concerns, while Greenpeace criticized the lawsuit as intimidation aimed at silencing protests.
