Turkey's Oruç Reis vessel has set off for an energy exploration mission in Somali waters, marking a significant step in Somalia's energy development. The Somali Foreign Ministry praised Turkey's ongoing support, describing the occasion as a "historic milestone" for the country’s economic progress and energy sector.
The Oruç Reis is tasked with surveying Somalia's oil and gas reserves, accompanied by support and security ships. Somali Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Abdirizak Mohamed commented on the voyage, highlighting the importance of seismic research conducted offshore Somalia.
Earlier this year, Turkey and Somalia signed agreements allowing Turkey’s state-owned oil company, Turkish Petroleum, to obtain exploration licenses for three offshore areas, each covering approximately 5,000 square kilometers. These surveys aim to explore potential energy resources in Somalia's waters.
Turkey has been a strong ally of Somalia, investing in various sectors including education, infrastructure, and healthcare, as well as providing military training and humanitarian aid.
