Rotterdam Launches Digital Bunker Trial

Vitol, ZeroNorth, and the Port of Rotterdam initiate a digital bunker trial to improve efficiency and data quality in bunkering operations, aiming for full digitalization at Europe's largest bunker hub.

Vitol, Danish tech provider ZeroNorth, and the Port of Rotterdam have launched a digital bunker trial, marking a step toward fully digitalized bunker operations. The four-week trial includes three to four bunker deliveries using ZeroNorth’s electronic bunker delivery note (eBDN) solution, aiming to streamline processes by reducing time, improving operational efficiency, and enhancing data accuracy.

The project is designed to assess the benefits of digital over manual bunker delivery notes and to position Rotterdam as a pioneer in digital bunkering in Europe, following Singapore’s lead. After the trial, the system will be integrated into the port’s operations, supporting the transition to a fully digital workflow.

Saskia Mureau, Director of Customer Digital at the Port of Rotterdam, highlighted the pilot's potential in boosting operational efficiency and sustainability. Meanwhile, Kenneth Juhls from ZeroNorth emphasized the importance of transparency and efficiency in supporting the shipping industry's energy transition.

Vitol’s Ian Butler added that digitalization could bring significant operational benefits, increasing transparency and reducing costs across the bunkering sector.
