Indian Ports Face Strike Threat Over Wage Disputes

Indian dockworkers plan strikes at major ports starting 17 December over unresolved wage and pension disputes, risking supply chain disruptions.

Indian dockworkers have announced indefinite strikes at key ports from 17 December, citing government delays in addressing wage revisions and pension benefits. Labor unions accuse the Indian Ports Association (IPA) of failing to honor promises made during negotiations to avert a strike in August.

Union leaders claim the lack of productivity-linked reward (PLR) guidelines has left interim retirees without benefits, fueling unrest. Preparatory rallies are planned at port locations on 5 December.

India’s 12 government-controlled ports face growing competition from private operators like Adani Ports, whose Mundra terminal recently surpassed Nhava Sheva as the busiest container gateway. Industry observers suggest funding challenges may be delaying government action on wage settlements.

The potential disruptions come as Indian exports showed a 17% year-on-year rebound in October, offering a rare boost to trade sentiment amid global uncertainties.
